Dows Road Modern Traditional Family Homestead

These homeowners sought out Emily Hughes’ help when they decided to build their custom family home, close in proximity to their extended family, with Buresh Construction Co. The home is perfectly situated on an acreage in Cedar Rapids, taking in breathtaking views of the Dows Nature Preserve surrounding it. Emily Hughes and the Mix Home Design Team partnered with the homeowner and builder, Buresh Construction Co, to create a transitional family homestead that incorporated many beautiful design elements the homeowner had carefully researched and discovered through scouring design blogs and touring various parade homes in Minneapolis. Their design aesthetic was elevated, and the goal was to build a family homestead with sophisticated, modern traditional details as a backdrop for comfortable family living and entertaining.

Emily Hughes and the home owners further collaborated on finish selection with Devonna Wood of Cabinet Studio, who provided the kitchen, pantry, bar and bathroom design layouts, cabinets and cabinet hardware. Additional custom elements in these areas were built by the Buresh Construction team, who also provided the design and fabrication of all custom built-ins in the closets, along with the custom trim details throughout the home.

Sourcing from Mix Home Mercantile’s array of vendors, Emily and her design team provided furnishings that reflected the client’s love of updated traditional style, while incorporating one-of-a-kind vintage items from Czech Village and family photos throughout to make the space feel more personal.
